RESOLUTION N0. 235
WHEREAS, Barkley. Regional Airport in Paducah, Kentucky, is ably serviced by the
Federal Aviation Administration's Flight Service Station, which provides radio communications,
flight plan coordination, weather briefings, navigational aids, airman examinations, and other
services vital to the safety and convenience of local air travelers.; and __ _
WHEREAS, the Federal Aviation Administration has announced-plans to modernize and
consolidate its current 351 Federal Flight Service Stations into 61, resulting in the closing
of over= 200 existing stations; and
WHEREAS, this consolidation/modernization will likely result in the closing of the
Paducah facility, resulting in its. relocation;to Louisville, with only one station serving the
entire Commonwealth of Kentucky; and .
WHEREAS, .the closing: o'f the Flight Service Station would have an adverse impact on
flight safety at Barkley Regional Airport because the local employees of the Flight Service
Station are familiar with local terrain, weather conditions on an instantaneous basis, and air
traffic patterns. These items are especially critical with the temporary decommissioning of
the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower at Barkley Regional Airport since 1981. The local station
here can serve the aviation industry in this area better than any remote facility; and
WHEREAS, the planned closing of the Flight Service Station would have an adverse
impact on Barkley Regional Airport and the local economy of McCracken County; and
WHEREAS, it has been a policy of the Federal Aviation Administration to locate these
Flight Service Stations where they will provide the best service to those persons receiving
air traffic conditions, information and service; in this case, to McCracken County and to
parts of western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY, that the City of
Paducah declares its opposition to the potential closing of the Paducah Flight Service Station
at Barkley Regional Airport; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Paducah, Kentucky, strongly urges all
governmental entities in western Kentucky, federal, state and local, and the private sector,
to work toward providing an appropriate facility for such a Flight Service Station as is
required by the Federal Aviation Administration; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk transmit a copy of this Resolution to the
applicable and responsible federal, state and local agencies.
THIS RESOLUTION shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption.
