HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinances Book 17, Page 219, No Resolution NumberA RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO INFORM OUR CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS OF THE INTEREST OF THE CITY OF PADUCAH IN PERMITTING THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE STEAMBOAT, DELTA QUEEN WHEREAS, in 1966, Congress passed legislation known as the "Safety at Sea Law", and WHEREAS, the U. S. Coast Guard has found the steamboat Delta Queen to be unsafe under the 1966 standards, and WHEREAS, the Delta Queen is the last of an historical era of passenger steamboats plying the inland waterways, and WHEREAS, U. S. Lawmakers from Kentucky and Southern Indiana are attempting to obtain legislation to permanently exempt the river steamboat from the said safety at sea law, and WHEREAS, we find and believe that the requirements for safety at sea are different from the needs of river vessels, and HWEREAS, we conclude that application of the sea law to the inland waterway is unnecessary and based on erroneous concepts, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY: SECTION 1. That the Mayor be authorized and directed to write each of Kentucky's Congressmen and Senators and forward a copy of this resolution to them, and to urge them to promote legislation permanently exempting tiver steamboats from the 1966 Safety at Sea Law.
