HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinances Book 12, Page 556, No Ordinance Number556 ED AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF EIGHTEEN TRAFFIC SUPERVISORS; PRESCRIBING THEIR DUTIES; FIXING THEIR COMPENSATION AND TERM OF EMPLOYMENT; AND APPROPRIATING THE SUM OF $1,200 FOR PAYMENT OF THE COMPENSATION OF SUCH SUPERVISOR WHEREAS, by reason of the great increase in the population of the City of Paducah since the beginning of the construdtion of the Atomic Energy Plant, con- gested traffic conditions qre such that it is impossible for the limited personnel of the Police Department to efficiently control the movement of traffic in the city; and WHEREAS, it is imperative that the Police Department be given immediate assistance for the proper direction and control of traffic during the holiday season; and WHEREAS, the Auxiliary Police Department of the City of Paducah, a volun- tary association of civic minded individuals created for the purpose of assisting the regular Police Department in times of emergency, is composed of persons the City Manager may find qualified to perform the duties of traffic supervisors; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY: SECTION 1. That the City Manager be, and he is hereby authorized to appoint eighteen qualified persons to serve -as part time employees of the City of Paducah in the direction and control of traffic until January 1, 1952. The persons so employed shall be known as Traffic Supervisors and it shall be their duty to direct and control traffic at such locations as may be designated by the officer of the Police Department having the responsibility for the proper control of traffic. No such Traffic Supervisors shall be employed longer than five hours per day. Each shall be paid the sum of $1.25 per hour for his services. SECTION 2. No person appointed to the position of a traffic supervisor shall have power to make arrests, to execute process, or to perform any duties of a police officer other than that of directing and controlling traffic. He shall not be a member of the Police Department or acquire any right or privilege under the rules of civil service governing the members of the Police Department of the city. SECTION 3. There is hereby set aside and appropriated a sum of not exceeding $1,200 for payment of the compensation to which the Traffic Supervisors shall be entitled for their services, the amount thereof to be charged to the appropriation made to the salary account of the Police Department of the City of Paducah under the annual apportionment ordinance and the amendments thereto. The compensation of the Traffic Supervisors shall be paid to them at the same time and in the same manner as the salaries of other employees of the city are paid. 557 ; SECTION 4.
