Ordinance No.
WHEREAS, we have visited the nest Kentucky Industrial College and
noticed the economical arrangement in the present building and the good
signs of domestic science; and
WHEREAS, we have here before us evidence of the -financial benefit
of this institution, which is shown in the fact that our own citizens,
both white and colored, admit that the City of Louisville gives consid-
erable money which is spert in our city, thereby increasing the trade of
our merchants, as is testified to by I,ir. J. A. Williams and our white
ministers, each placing before us their letter to this effect; and
WHEREAS, these persons who so heartily endorse this institution
state in clear terms that we should help this work, v;hich is shown in
the following words from our white ministers, to -wit: ."Vice deem the work
of the college an eminently creditable one for the colored people of our
community, and worthy of the utmost support which our city and county
can give", which sentence, when interpreted means that our city should
help this institution; and
V.HEREAS, the colored people of our city needs this encouragement,
which is shown in the fact that the subscription list of the school,
shows that many of our citizens donate to this college, each of us being
among that number; VOW THEREFORE,
Upon the endorsement of our citizens and our white ministers who
have seen the operation of the school, and from the fact that many of
our citizens are at this time attending this institution and receiving
its benefits:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF C0E1iISSIONERS OF THE CITY Or
PnDUC AH, KENTUCKY:
That the City hereby donate to the said West Kentucky Industrial
College Three Hundred (;300.) Dollars to be paid out of the contingent
fund of the City.
