the present gas contract with the city, the latter to pay
the same rates for lighting the new, lamp posts as is paid
under the present contract, and this additional contrac[ is
to expire at the same time the present contract expires.
The present contract is to apply to this additional exten-
sion in all respects. This ordinance to take effect as soon
as the gas company files its written acceptance of same
with the council.

Gravel Roads.
An ordinance for the mayor and common council of the
city of Paducah, on conditions, to subscribe one thousand
dollars a mile t, the capital stock of the Paducah and North
Ballard and Paducah and Benton, and Paducah and Love-
laceville Gravel Road company, with their branchei as here-
in named; when the Mayfield Gravel Road company get it
charter to build a gravel road it/shall receive the tame aid
from this ordinance as other roads mentioned.
Be it ordained by the mayor and common council of the
city of Paduca'i, Ky.:
t, That the mayor of the city of Paducah be, and is
hereby authorized to subscribe one thusand dollars a mile
as hereinafter prescrib«d to each of the following gravel
road companies, and their branches as named in tl:ie ordi-
nance, ah within the limits of the county of McCracken; ons
thousand dollars a mile to the Paducah and Nortb Ballard
main gravel road; also to a branch of said road to Hinkle -

ville, the point of branching from said road to be selected
by its board of directors, which action must receive the
sanction of the street committee of this council before
any bonds shall be,delivered by the mayor to said branch.
One thousand dollars a mile to the Paducah and Benton
Gravel R1oad company, and one thousand dollars a m'.le to
the Paducah and Lov elaceville Gravel Road company.
When the Mayfield Gravel Road company shall obtain a
charter to build a gravel road 'it shall receive the same
aid from this ordinance as the other roads mentioned.
The subscription to these roads and branches are to be
made in the coupon bonds of the city of Paducah, bearing
interest . at the rate of six per cent per annum. Said inter-
est to be paid semi-annually at the office of the treasur-
er of the city of Paducah.
2. The payment of 'this subscription shall be made in
the following manner: When the president of any of the
roads named in the ordinance shall report one mile of his
road completed, it shall '-e the duty of the street committee
and city engineer to go over the mile, and upon th-tir writ-
ten statements' to. the mayor that said mile is completed in
a workmanlike manner, and in compliance with the require -
meats of its charter, the mayor sha'l then deliver to the
president one bond of one thnnsand dollars and caused to
be issued to the city of Paducah, by the. proper officers of
said road cbrtificates of stock of equal amount with Elie
bond or bonds delivered. But it is hereby provided that no
bond shall be delivered to any road until the president of
said road has satisfied the finance committee, of this co.ul-
cil that they have sufficient funds on hand to complete said
road to the county line, and the same with the branches,
to their destination. And it shall be the duty of the fi-
nance committee to report to the council for approval, giv-
ing an exhibit of the means of the road to finish it to the
county line.

3• Before any subscription becomes binding on the city
of Paducah, each one of the gravel road companies named
in this ordinance, if they accept the subscription, shal reor-
ganize its board of directors and subject all of its officers
•o a new election, and in all such elections the mayor shall
cast the vote of the city for president and board of direct-
ors. But it is provided that he shall cast his vote for officers
and directors as the council shall direct; and in case he re-
fuses to do this, the council shall select ene of its own mem-
bers to cast the vote for the city of Paducah.
4• The bonds issued as subscription to the capital
stock of these roads shall be known as the gravel road
bonds of the city of Paducah, end the principal and interest
of which are to be paid and the money raised by taxation
upon the property of the city as all other taxes are aid; but
it is provided that no levy shall be made for tl

nance it is hereby made the duty of the mayor to have the
proper notice published in the city papers, preparatory to
holding the election in 'he city of Paducah, which election
shall be held on the 11th day of September, 1869, at all the
voting Places in the city. The ballot shall be "Approval Of
subscription to gravel roods" or "Non approval of suhscrip-
tion to gravel roads." If upon a fair and legal election "ap-
proval" receivesa maj ority of the votes cast, then this ordi_
nance shall be in full force, and it shall be. the duty of the
mayor and council to carry out its provisions; if 'non -ap-
proval" receives a majority of the votes cast at said elec-
tion, then this ordinance shall be a dead letter,
force and eand of no
effect.

Mayfield Gravel Road.
An ordinance, for the City of Paducah, Ky., to take stock
in the Paducah and Mayfield Gravel Road company, at the
rate of eight hundred dollars .per mile, and pay for the same
by issuing its bonds therrfor.
Be it ordained by tie Council of the City of Paducah:

t. That the mayor of the city of Paducah be and is
hereby authorize' and directed on behalf of said city to sub-
scribe to the capital stockof said Paducah and Mayfield

2. Be it further ordained that the city of Paducah
shall not be bound to subscribe for said stock until said i
gravel road companyshall, with good surety, to be approved
by the city council, execute bond to the city of Paducah in
the sum of five thousand dollars, conditioned that said i
gravel road company will build and complete its said road
five miles t:)ward the Graves county line in three years from
the passage of this ordinance and will not apply any part
of the dividends of said road to the building or toward the
completion of the same, and that all individual subscriptions t
to said capital stack, otirer than that of the city of Paducah,

shall be paid for in cash cr in work and material to build the

3. Be it further ordained that said bonds of the city of t
Paducah shall be of the denamination of one hundred dollars ...�
each or for a less amount at the option of the city council,
and the same khall be cclivered as fo!lows: When the '
president of said gravel road company shall, in writing, re-
port to the city council that one mile of its road is com-
pleted as required by iLs t barter, attested by the mayor of
the city, city engineer and street committee that the ;ame is
so completed, a bond for $3oo.00 shall be delivered to said

on in the same way in all respects as each mile of said road

4. That said bonds shall bear date and draw interest, t
respectively, from the lime of delivery of each bond as here-

` 5. Be it further ordained that -the foregoing subscrip-
tion of stock is made subject to a reorganization of said 1

thereof. That a new election of the same shall be cailed by
said gravel road comp:nu,3, and that the city of Paducah
shall be entitled to a vote in the election of new officers in '

to be cast by, the mayor as he shall be directed by the
council, bur if not so directed then according to his own dis-
cretion.

6. Be it further ordained that the subscription hereinbe-
fore named is made upon the condition that said gravel road
be built in such manner that the gravel placed thereon shall
at no place be less in width than sixteen feet, and the gravel
shall not be less in depth in the center of the road than
twelve inches, *and not Itss in depth at the edges than eight
inches. . And as a further consideration, it is required by '
this council that said ' gravel road company shall annually, on

tion, the following ordinance was adopted and spread on rec-
ord, to -wit:

er to take out of the water, for repairs, steamboats and ves-
sels measuring three hundred and fifty feet keel, to be worked
by steam powe4 and the wheels and machinery to be of iron,
