WORKSHOP
AIR QUALITY AND SMOKE FREE DISCUSSION
Dr. Shawn Jones, advocate for banning smoking in restaurants/public places, provided
new information regarding the dangers of second-hand smoke. Dr. Jones informed the
Board that the McCracken County Medical Society received a grant which stipulated that
air quality tests had to be performed in City of Paducah restaurants to assess levels of
indoor air pollution associated with smoking. These results were published in the July
2006 issue of the Journal of the Kentucky Medical Association. He distributed
ordinances from other cities that have gone smoke free. Dr. Jones suggested that if the
City moves forward with the preparation of an ordinance to ban smoking that an Equal
Protection Clause be included in the ordinance.
The Board discussed the issue and hopes to make a decision in the near future.
