HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-10-15 Brooks Stadium Commission Meeting Minutes193375 MINUTES OF BROOKS STADIUM COMMISSION MEETING December 10, 2015 The regular meeting of the Brooks Stadium Commission was conducted at Noon on Thursday, December I 0, 201 5, at the offices of Paducah Parks and Recreation. Commissioners in attendance were Frank Hideg, Neel Canoll, Bill Pinkston, Greg McKeel, Howard Finley, Lenore Goode, and Mark Thompson. Special guests included Ed Taylor, radio broadcaster, and former major league baseball player, Steve Finley. The meeting was called to order by President Hideg. An invocation was given by Lenore Goode. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Howard Finley. By motion made and seconded, the minutes of the last board meeting were determined not to be read. A financial report was provided by Treasurer Neel Carroll. A copy of Neel,s balance sheet and profit and loss statement is contained in the separate correspondence file as well as appended to the minutes of this meeting. In sum, at the present time, the total current assets are $64,1 76. Secretary Bil[ Pinkston gave a Website report. Pinkston reported as to the meeting that was conducted last week with Amy Denton, Frank Hideg, and IVS representative, paige. Paige reports that she will include a section in the Brooks stadium website dedicated to the Paducah chiefs Baseball team along with copies of the articles that have been written in The Paducah Sur? over the last couple of months. President Hideg thereupon reported that the Paducah Tilghman baseball schedule is completed and will be appended to the Website in short order. Presidenl Hideg reported on the American Legion state toumament conducted in 2015. Only a handful of teams showed up in large measure due to the demise of American Legion baseball. President Hideg reported that the National club Baseball Association world Series will be conducted at Brooks Stadium May 26 through June 3,2016. President Hideg reported that the Southem Illinois Miners will play the Evansville baseball team on May 7,2016 (Frontier League). Murray State will play the University of Kentucky on May 17, 2016, at Brooks Stadium. The Polk Brooks Toumament will be conducted June 23 through lune 26,2016. Paducah Chief s general manager, Greg McKeel, provided a report as to the status of progress on the Chiefs. McKeel reported that the Chiefs have lined up former major league baseball player Joe Hall to be the coach. Former major league player Gabriel Shaw will be the pitching coach. Twenty collegiate players have already been "signed" to play for the Chiefs this coming summer. McKeel reported that we have outstanding offers to four more pitchers. We want to field a full roster of 24 players which will include 12 pitchers and hopefully some ofthe position players will also be able to pitch if needed. McKeel reported that so far 14 of the players signed will be able to live at home with their parents. Lenore Goode reported on the status of attempting to obtain local housing and provided a letter for circulation to friends and family to recruit homeowners to host a ball player or two for the summer. Bill Pinkston reported that it would be easy to obtain a speaking date at the Rotary Club for General Manager Greg McKeel. We will shoot for making that happen in February or March. Greg McKeel reported that tickets to the Chiefs' home games should actually arrive in Paducah within the next two days. Tickets will be $8 per ticket for chair seats if purchased on a season ticket basis; chair seat tickets will be $10 at the gate; the cost will be $ 105 for season tickets for nonchair seats. Twenty-two games will actually be played at Brooks Stadium this season, including the 2016 All Star game for the Ohio Valley Collegiate Baseball League. General Manager McKeel reported that transportation for the team has not yet been finalized but he reported that Chip Cox of Paducah Area Transport has indicated that it would be willing to donate the use of a bus at its cost. All the Chiefs would have to do would be to pay the driver. General Manager McKeel reported that Paducah Bank will sponsor purchase ofthe Chief s uniforms: $7,500 for two sets of uniforms (a home uniform and an away uniform). Pepsi has agreed to sponsor payment for the bats. General Manager McKeel reported that we need someone to sponsor purchase of baseballs. He estimated that it would cost $2,500 for a season worth of baseballs, which is basically two dozen balls per game. General Manager McKeel also reported that it would be helplul to have a corporate sponsor for each home game at a cost of $ I ,000 per game. For that $ 1,000 the corporation would receive tickets for its employees to the game it sponsored. Ed Taylor reported that he would be broadcasting on the radio all games. Aimee Denton, assistant to Secretary Pinkston, reported that she is making good progress on purchasing a beer license with the City of Paducah for the Chiefs. Ms. Denton reported that she needs a background check to be performed on all the commissioners. Mark Thompson of the Parks Department reported that he has forms in house that he will email for circulation to Commission members. It was reported that it would take a week or so for a background check to be retumed. Left for the next meeting will be the "marketing phase" to be informally worked upon between now and the next meeting of the Commission which hopefully will be conducted sometime in January.
