ORDINANCE NO. 2001-11- �'S
AN ORDINANCE REQUIRING AGENCIES OF THE CITY TO
RECITE THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE BEFORE EVERY
REGULAR OR SPECIAL MEETING
WHEREAS, the events of September 11, 2001, have reminded citizens of
the United States of America, including the Mayor and City Commissioners of the City
of Paducah, of the importance and value of our rights and freedoms as citizens of this
country; and
WHEREAS, those events have caused us to realize that those cherished
rights and freedoms are not universally enjoyed or accepted, and that there are people
who seek to disrupt and destroy those freedoms through fear and terror; and
WHEREAS, the City of Paducah recognizes that because of these events,
Americans need to stand united and express their support of our country, its symbols, and
its basic guarantees of liberty and justice for all; and
WHEREAS, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance expresses our support for
our country, its symbols, and its freedoms.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY:
SECTION 1. The City Commission hereby requires and directs the City
of Paducah and its agencies, from this day forth, to begin all meetings, whether regular or
special, with a recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.
SECTION 2. The City Commission directs the City Clerk to send a copy
of this ordinance to every agency of the City of Paducah.
SECTION 3. This ordinance shall be read on two separate days and will
become effective upon summary publication pursuant to KRS Chapter 424.
