A RESOLUTION INDORSING THE PASSAGE OF PENDING LEGISLATION IDEI:TIFIED AS
S-11/.4 FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE LOiYZR CUIā¢IBERLAND PROJECT
11HEREAS: Legislation is now pending before your committee for authoriza-
tion of the Lower Cumberland Project on the Cumberland River as substitute
legislation for the presently authorized navigation only Kuttawa and Dover
Projects and;
WHEREAS: The outstanding nationwide benefits from multipurpose river
development is apparent to the people of Paducah, Kentucky, and;
T;HEREAS: The benefits from power production, navigation improvement,
flood control, recreational development, stream flow regulation and related
features, will provide a highly favorable return on the investment which will
more than offset the cost of construction and operation of the project with
interest on the investment, and;
11HEREAS: The continued economic advancement of the Paducah area is depend
ent on full development of our mater resources, and;
CII-RI;MEAS: Industrial production has been retarded and industrial expansion
has been curtailed in the Calvert City, Kentucky, area due to inadequate power
supply and the need for additional power p-roduciug facilities is essential to
meet these defense installation demands, and;
WH3REAS: Current and projected reductions in construction employment at
defense installations within the Paducah area makes available an outstanding
labor supply for construction of the Lower Cumberland Project, and;
WHEREAS: The construdtion labor market will be in critical need of stab-
ilization for the forthcoming, three to six year period it view of the drastic
fluctuations in employment at the Government defense plants.
NO13, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The City Commission of the City of
Paducah, Kentucky, in regular meeting on December 15, 1953, bu unanimous vote
wishes to go on record as fully indorsing the passage of pending legislkation
identified as S-1144 for -the construction of the Lower Cumberland Project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: Copies of this resolution be forwarded to
the United States Senators from I.entucky and Tennessee, the Governor of I:entucky
and Congressional Representatives from the First and Eighth Districts of Kentucky
and the Second, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Districts of Tennessee.
