T17', -2, under an ordinance adopted by the _.Oard of
Commissioners on the 17th day of I.:ay, 1939, the City L:anazer was
empowered and directed to decrease the number of men then employe
in the police department by eight (8) and the number of men then
employed in the fire department b; e:i int (8) men, as of ::ay 13,
1939, and in carrying said ordinance into effect he was directed
to retire from act_ve duty the youn;est men in point of service;
and,
C„IEREAS, by reason of the reduction in the personnel of the
fire department, the increase in the fire hazard has recuired the
ratins bureau to ;,reatly increase the rates for fire insurance
policies cove.rin_- the buildings and properties in the City of
Paducah, an? it is acvi. sable in order to promote the
public health, and safety, to imma_dia.tely restore the eff'_ciency
of the fire department by er:ploy n,� e -7 --ht additional men; and,

SECTIC:; 1.
That the Cita* LSanager be, and he is hereby empowered and
directed for esotre the Fire Department of the City of Paducah to
its former strength by employing in said department for a period
of two months, eight (8) additional men as of the lst day of
February, 1940, and ino arryin`; tLis ordinance into effect, he she

rules and regulations of the fire ane: the Civil

class.

The police department shall continue to be maintained with-
out the employment of additional men therein, and the ei_,ht 'S)
men removed from active duty in that department as of', 13, 1939
shall not bo returned to duty until ordered so to do pursuant to
ordinances which may hereafter be adopted by this .card.
