A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE ACTION TAKEN BY THE RETAIL
MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION FOR THE CLOSING OF ALL BUSINESS ESTABL
IN OBSERVANCE OF THE DAY WHEN THE UNITED NATIONS WILL ATTAIN IAILIT�RY
VICTORY IN EURBPE, AND URGING ALL CITIZENS OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY,
OFFER THEIR PRAYERS ON V -DAY FOR THE PEACE IN EUROPE AND FOR DIV
GUIDANCE IN THE PROSECUTION OF THE WAR AGAINST JAPAN IN ORDER THA
PEACE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD 14AY SOON BE RESTORED
WHEREAS, on the date of signing the Armistice at the close
of World War 1, riotous celebration took place in many parts of
the country, and the occasion was celebrated in some instances
by an over -indulgence in intoxicating liquor3) and,
WHEREAS, it is deemed more fitting and proper by the members
of the Board of Commissioners that the people, instead of engaging
in unrestrained celebrations, wild jubulation and mass gatherings
in downtown streets, should attend religious services or at least
should pause long enough to thank God, each in his own way, for
the peace in Europe, and ask for strength to complete the
enormous task which lies before us in the Pacific.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COIR.1I3SIONERS
OF THE CITY OF PADUCAH, KENTUCKY:
SECTION 1.
That the Board of Commissioners heartily endorse the plan
of the Retail Merchants Association for the closing of all busi
establishments when hostilities in Europe ceasem that the Board
cooperate with all business, civic, fraternal and religious
organizations which have adopted plans for observance of V -Day
in a sane, sensible and reverent manner by requesting the people
to go to the churches for prayers and thanksgiving and for praise
to God for the restoration of peace in Europe; and that all
citizens be urged to observe the day by pausing long enough to
thank God for the l4bors and sacrifices of those men and women
who have brought about the peace in Europe, and for Divine guidang,
strength in the prosecution of the 'n'ar against Japan in order that
throughout the workd may soon be restored.
SECTION 2.
This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from
and after its adoption.
